Do you wonder which is the perfect way of oiling your hair? Well we have a few techniques up our sleeves. Starting with why do we oil our hair? To moisturise and hydrate the hair, as well as smooth and protect it from all your styling tools.
But hair oil is definitely not a one-size-fits-all product. So what’s the point right? Our hair is dead once it breaks through the surface of the scalp. Similar to skin, we need oil to have healthy, strong hair. It not only lubricates the outer cuticle but also strengthens the inner core by providing moisture to help keep the bonds strong.
Everyone’s scalp and hair are different and some are just oilier than others. That’s where hair oils come in. The store-bought product is meant to replicate and supplement the natural oils that our bodies already make. If you have an overactive scalp that produces too much oil, don’t add even more to your hair. If you have naturally dry hair or hair that’s been stripped of natural oils from repeated shampooing, you might want to try oiling.
Adding moisture through oil can be a key step to maintaining hair and scalp health. It can also make it stronger, softer, and shinier.
Before we get into the perfect way of oiling your hair, it’s important to know how to choose the right one.
Choose your oil
It is up to you as to how many oils you want to use. You can use one oil on your hair, or two to three oils. It all depends on how much money you want to spend and how intensive you want your oil treatment to be.
The two basic types of oils are carrier oils and essential oils.
- Carrier oils are used as a base into which the more concentrated essential oils are mixed.
- Many people choose to use carrier oil alone on their hair. You don’t need to use essential oil if you don’t want to.
- Essential oils are more highly concentrated. After diluting them with a carrier oil, you apply them to the scalp and roots only.
Choose a carrier/base oil
Base oil is the most important basic requirement. There are a wide variety of options to choose from, each offering different benefits and drawbacks.
- Almond oil: Almond oil is rich in vitamin E and healthy fats that does wonders to the hair. It’s particularly effective at treating dry flaky scalp and dandruff.
- Argan oil: Argan oil is a Moroccan product rich in antioxidants. Although users swear it produces dramatic improvements to both hair and skin, it can be pricey. Any inexpensive Argan oil you find on the market is likely inauthentic and not worth the money.
- Castor oil: Castor oil is thought to stimulate hair growth and decrease hair loss, treat dry scalps, prevent split ends, and increase shine. However, it’s a thick, gloopy oil that many don’t like the feeling of. If you use it, you should dilute it with a thinner oil, like grapeseed oil.
- Coconut oil: In addition to adding moisture to hair and scalp, coconut oil is also rich in protein. This can help heal damaged hair, which is composed largely of protein itself. One drawback is that coconut oil can turn solid in cooler temperatures. To melt it, you can warm it in your hand before use or place it in the microwave for 2-3 seconds.
- Extra virgin olive oil: EVOO is thought to prevent hair loss, treat dry scalp, and improve moisture and shine. It also has antibacterial and anti-fungal qualities that protect the scalp from problems like dandruff. However, it may be too heavy for thin hair.
- Grapeseed oil: Grapeseed oil is a lighter oil that might be most useful for people who don’t need a big boost of moisture. If you have otherwise healthy hair, use it as a balancing moisturiser.
Choose an essential hair oil
There is a common misconception regarding essential oils being just scented, but they do much more than that. Each different oil brings their own benefits and can help improve the health of your hair. With the right essential oil for you, you can have luscious, sweet smelling locks.
- Rosemary essential oil: Rosemary oil has a wide variety of uses, but it’s known to stimulate blood flow. Applying it to the scalp improves follicle and root health. Rosemary is also a known source of compounds that are frequently found in Minoxidil, which can be useful in treating and preventing hair loss. Rosemary oil is also one of the few natural oils that actually provide a real moisturising effect on your hair.
- Grapefruit essential oil: This fragrant essential oil is used to stimulate hair growth and balance out oily hair.
- Rose essential oil: Rose essential is used to strengthen hair roots and prevent hair loss, an oil for hair growth. Plus, it smells wonderful!
- Carrot seed oil. Carrot seed oil is filled with vitamins and can actually stimulate hair growth by encouraging new cell turnover.
- Lavender oil. Lavender can soothe your scalp and reduce dryness, itchiness, and dandruff. Additionally, the scent is very calming.
Finally, the perfect way of oiling hair:
- One way to use hair oil is as a moisturising treatment. To do so, apply before you take a shower, pin your hair up and let the steam from the shower open the cuticle and penetrate into the hair.
- Another way is to give your hair a good oil massage. Mix hot oil and conditioner onto the hair and scalp and massage it really well. Then you sit under a heating cap, steamer or dryer for about 20 minutes. After which you wash the oil out, your hair will feel revamped and re-hydrated.
- To use it like a styling product, apply it before blow-drying to help keep hair smooth and free of flyaway.
- You can also add oil while your hair is still wet. On the other hand, if you have a blowout and your hair feels dry, you can add oil to those dry strands.
One warning: You can’t apply too much hair oil. The first rule for perfect way of oiling hair is to use the right amount of oil as too much of a good thing can be harmful.
